Berkhamsted volunteer is Regional Cadet of the Year

A 15-year-old girl has been named St John Ambulance's Regional Cadet of the Year 2017 in the charity's East Region.

Beth Smith took the title at a two-day contest, which saw the best of the first aid charity’s young volunteers from across the country take part in a variety of tough tasks.

Beth, a cadet at the Berkhamsted unit, has been a St John Ambulance volunteer since 2012. She was selected as District Cadet of the Year 2017 for Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire last year.

The competition, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, was held in Staffordshire.

Designed to stretch the abilities of the 31 cadets present, it included a wide range of subjects such as communication, teamwork, presentation, working with the media and social skills. .

Beth, who lives in Watford, is studying for her GCSEs at Queen’s School, Bushey.

She has successfully completed 22 of 24 subjects required to attain the Grand Prior Award, the highest qualification available to a St John Ambulance Cadet.
