Fancy yourself as a bit of a detective? Now you can directly help police solve crime with the use of a new tablet and mobile app.

The innovative ‘Facewatch ID’ application for tablet computers and Apple or Android smartphones will crack down on criminals by allowing people to view photos of the county’s most wanted at the swipe of a screen.

Users can simply scroll through and identify people that Herts Police would like to speak to, either in relation to crimes or as witnesses or victims.

The force has been provided with the system for free, with intelligence officers trained to upload the images of people who are sought in connection with an incident or active investigation themselves.

Chief Constable Andy Bliss said: “We are committed to making Herts a safe place for people to live and Facewatch ID provides yet another way for us to achieve that.

“We are keen to utilise technology to tackle criminals and the community can now help us to do that with this pioneering app.

“I would urge the people of Herts to download the app and to help us to continue to maintain the county as one of the safest places to live in the country.”

Budding sleuths can select a radius of up to 50 miles to display images, and should they recognise any people pictured, they can fill out an anonymous form to be submitted as a suggestion to the police. The current address or whereabouts of the individual can also be included, should the app user know it.

The county force already posts photos on its Facebook page, and has its own ‘Wanted’ section on its website The force boasts numerous success stories down to the help of the eagle-eyed public, but this latest way to appeal for civilian engagement is anticipated to be ‘extremely effective’.
