Madison Coates opened Berkhamsted’s Madison Beauty in September 2013, but in July last year she spent several weeks in hospital and many months in hospital recuperating after being hit by serious illness.

She was nominated for Beautician of the Year in the English Hair and Beauty Awards.

With fingers crossed the young businesswoman attended a glitzy awards ceremony in Manchester on Sunday.

But unfortunately she did not win the accolade.

“It was a good evening,” said Madison. “I feel really privileged and proud that my clients nominated me.”

Up for three awards was organic hairdressers The Hair Secret, also in Berkhamsted. The business had been shortlised for Hair Salon of the Year, Woman’s Stylist of the Year and Team of the Year.

They also missed out on the gongs but Church Lane salon owner Natalie Lutpon said: “I’m still mega proud of my team and will be entering a couple of more awards later in the year.”
