Be sure to use a Good Guy when buying fireworks

These are shopkeepers that have signed a contract agreeing to store and sell fireworks responsibly.

The initiative proved a huge success when it was launched as a pilot in Dacorum, Broxbourne and Hertsmere last year.

Of the 118 retailers believed to be selling fireworks in these areas, 61 per cent signed up to the scheme.

They were all visited by officers from Herts Trading Standards to ensure the fireworks were being stored safely.

Basic fire safety checks were carried out by firefighters and volunteers aged under 18 were recruited to test whether shops were complying with the law.

The conditions of the Good Guy contract includes not selling fireworks before October 22, asking for proof of age from anyone that looks under 21 and staff training on the storage of fireworks.

Head of the joint police and county council community safety unit Superintendent Jon Chapman said: “We welcome the Good Guy trading scheme, which helps keep fireworks in the safest hands, reducing the risk of them being used in an anti-social or dangerous way.”
