Back to last century London at Watford Palace Theatre

Deep in the heart of the East End Poppy meets three men - Smith, a Russian-Jewish tailor with a Chinese past; Tommy Johns, a fading music hall artiste not long back from the trenches; and George Sampson, a dashing chauffeur.

Together they laugh, drink and disagree, make clothes, forge friendships and place their bets. Poppy + George, a new play by Diane Samuels, comes to Watford Palace Theatre from Friday, February 12, through to Saturday, February 27 (excluding Sundays).

Poppy + George is a romantic drama with music inspired by the good old days of music hall and beyond, featuring new original numbers that draw on a world of flamboyant dames, principal boys and comic turns, double entendre and a costume for even the most unexpected occasion.

Ms Samuels said: “Poppy and George is a little bit inspired by Joan Littlewood’s highly theatrical rendering of collective history, Oh What A Lovely War, and brings its own distinctive sense of playful questioning and ebullient innuendo to a love story with a difference. I can’t think of a better place to bring this very modern take on a time gone by than the Palace, which once really was a music hall. This production promises to be fun and I hope it also opens eyes and hearts to where we have been and where we might go next.”

The performances take place at 7.30pm each evening except Tuesday, February 16, when the play is on at 7pm. There are additional matinee performances at 2.30pm on the Saturdays and Thursdays.
