Awards for life saving police officer

DEDICATED police officers and force staff have been commended,

Among the award winners was Hemel Hempstead-based PC Simon Nelson who was given a Royal Humane Society Award and a Chief Constable’s Commendation.

Whilst off-duty in the early hours of the morning in April 2009, he helped saved the lives of a family who were trapped in their home by a fire.

The Adeyfield resident was woken by the blaze and called 999 before rushing to help the family escape. The fire, believed to have been started deliberately, began in a shed but quickly spread with flames consuming the back of the house and roof.

PC Nelson banged on the front door of the home to wake up the residents before giving the five people inside, including three young children, directions on how to get out.

Awards were presented on Tuesday, October 12 during a special ceremony at Welwyn Garden City with Chief Constable Frank Whiteley and High Sheriff for Herts Gerald Corbett.

Also on the awards list was Detective Constable Gary Hall, who lives in Berkhamsted and used to be based in Watford.

He was presented a Constable’s Commendation for his work as part of an investigation that saw a substantial amount of money being recovered and offenders being jailed.

Other awards to be presented at the ceremony included Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medals and Certificates of Congratulations.
