Award for officers who tried to save man’s life

Sergeant Des Cameron, who lives in Dacorum, received a Royal Humane Society Award with his colleague Constable Jonathan Hannan, for their actions in May last year.

The incident happened when a man was playing golf with his sons and friends at the Sandy Lodge Golf Club.

A thunderstorm started, and with no other shelter available the group went into a nearby copse. Almost immediately the man was struck by lightning.

Officers were immediately sent to the scene and joined two paramedics who had arrived moments earlier and were performing CPR on the victim.

Sgt Cameron and another colleague then arrived at the scene, and the four officers took turns in giving CPR.

Eventually they managed to restore the man’s pulse and he was airlifted to hospital, although he died three days later.

The officers were commended at a ceremony last month for both the professional manner in which they supported ambulance service colleagues and, given that there was a real risk of further lightning strikes injuring those attending, the courage they displayed in doing so.

All the officers also received Chief Constable’s Commendations.
