A cordon has been put in place and a small number of nearby homes have been evacuated as a precaution.
The army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been called to assess the item.
It is understood that the device is an unexploded Second World War shell, and that students were not evacuated from their classrooms.
