Another charity shop comes to town... and it’s looking for an Army of volunteers

A new Salvation Army shop is to launch at 207 Marlowes on October 21, but the charity is appealing for its very own Army of volunteers from the area to come forward and help run the store.

The shop will be the latest addition to the main shopping precinct’s vast collection of charity shops, which includes local causes such as Rennie Grove Hospice Care, as well as national charities such as Cancer Research UK.

The team is holding a Volunteer Open Day from 11am to 3pm next Wednesday, October 15 at the new premises for those interested in becoming a volunteer to learn more about what the role involves.

The charity’s trading company area manager Julie Wardley said: “We rely on the generosity of our volunteers, who are key members of the team in all our shops.

“Any time you can spare would be a tremendous help, whether it’s a few hours or a few days a week – whatever skills and interests you have, we’ll be able to put them to good use.

“We need help with tasks such as steaming and hanging clothes, ticketing, coding and we’re also in need of volunteer drivers to help pick up local donations.

“We offer training on all aspects of the work and our volunteers are entitled to discounted purchases.”

Julie and her team are also looking for donations to help fill the rails and shelves ahead of the opening day.

“We are very grateful for all donations from the public, whether it’s clothes, shoes, accessories or homewares,” she said. “All we ask is that the items are clean and in good condition, and that no electrical items are included as we cannot safety test them.”
