Gritter drivers have been out keeping our roads as safe as possible, as the winter chill hits Herts.

As most of us head home after a day at work, the gritting shift is just getting started.

If the forecast indicates freezing temperatures, the gritting team arrive at the Ware depot at 7pm, check their gritters and load with enough salt before beginning their routes by 8pm.

On return from a gritting run, they weigh any leftover salt in the gritter, log the amount and put it back into the salt barn.

They then wash the vehicle, to help prevent any rust developing, before heading home.

However, they will remain on call through the night should a second run be required.
