A point for reflection?

What do you think of Hemel Hempstead's latest piece of artwork?

It has been likened to a meringue, an ice cream and a faberge egg, but whatever shoppers think of Hemel Hempstead's new artwork, it is here to stay.

A Point for Reflection, a handcarved stone sculpture standing at 8ft 4" tall, has become the town's latest piece of public art.

It was installed at the Riverside Shopping Centre on Sunday (October 19) and officially unveiled by Mayor of Dacorum, councillor Carol Green, the following day.

London based artist Tim Shutter says the design was inspired by the shopping centre's watery location.

He said: "Point for Reflection is intended to conjure up associations with water, it looks like a rippling droplet with reflections of clouds, rain droplets, swirling rivulets and weaving water weeds, inspired my the River Gade."

The artwork's price tag was picked up by Riverside developer Crest Nicholson, as part of its planning agreement.

I consider myself to be a big minded person when it comes to art/modern art however when I saw this monstrosity today, the terms hideous, tasteless and unsuitable immediately sprang to my mind. Today it was still in its original pristine condition, as nauseous as that is, however I'm just waiting for the graffiti to start and in this case it will probably be an improvement, sorry I hate it

I could think of a lot better things money could be spent on then the sculpture, it looks like a giant honeycomb to me. What a total waste of money!!!!

A Point for Reflection What a complete waste of Tax Payers money. The money spent could have paid for something better for the community. I won't be surprised that these piece of unwanted piece of junk will be vandalised not in the distant future.

I take it the people of Hemel asked for this ? Just what we need, the council spending our money in the current climate, on what looks like a dinosaur doo doo...

I think this was a total waste of time and money there is no point in it at all and that money wud have been spent on summin more useful! talk about credit crunch try saving a bit... !

TEDS, Hemel Hempstead

Did you expect the people of Hemel to give positive views!!! You only have to take a walk through Hemel anytime of day to see that you would only recieve negative views. The money is spent, and at least we are able to view it, and at least it has not gone in some 'fat' bonus for someone that already has a 'fat' salary.....and then we would never see where the money was spent :-)

I don't like it at all. It screams out " Please graffiti on me" and looks totally out of place in Hemel Hempstead.

Well, as usual, people are knocking something different. Instead of it 'being awful' why not say, 'it's not to my taste'... Art, like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I think it has a charm about it.

Nat C, Hemel Hempstead

Not my taste! Disgusting! Waste of money... and if you think this is bad, wait 'till the Gateway sculpture is erected before Christmas in Breakspear Way!

I saw this when the man was working on it at the weekend and I said to my son how horrible was it was and he agreed and he's only 7. I dont know how much it cost but I can say whatever it was it was a waste of good money that could have been spent on getting our A&E department back... We dont like it...
