The VE Day 75 events have been scaled back across the country, in line with government guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic, but Dacorum Borough Council is highlighting a number of ways that residents can celebrate at home.

Friday, May 8, marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day - the official end of the Second World War in Europe.

Dacorum Borough Council is asking residents to join them in raising a glass from their doorsteps to commemorate Victory in Europe on Friday, May 8, at 3pm. Whilst giving a cheer, look out for the VE plane with its VE Day banner, which will be flying over the borough.

VE Day represents an end to nearly six years of a war that had cost the lives of millions; had destroyed homes, families, and cities; and had brought huge suffering throughout the Second World War.

Residents can create their own posters and bunting and decorate their homes, the government’s official 75 VE Day website has a toolkit with downloadable resources.

These include VE day bunting and posters that can be printed or coloured in and displayed at home and in windows, as well as poster templates that people can add their own personal messages of support to and/or create drawings and pictures.

There are also party guides with resources to help people put together their own celebrations at home, such as 1940s-style food menus and how to dance the Lindy Hop!

The British Legion is inviting the nation to join in a UK-wide rendition of Dame Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again at 9pm on VE Day.

You can find the song words on the British Legion website and the singalong will feature on the BBC as part of its VE Day broadcast.
