BAM Construct UK, which has its UK headquarters in Breakspear Park, in Breakspear Way, has been selected to construct what it is claimed will be the world’s most sustainable film and TV studio.

Expected to open in 2022, the studio, which will be close to the famous Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, is expected to create 2,000 jobs with 900 during construction and 1,500, including many production roles, once the complex is operational.

In addition, the studio will power the creation of thousands of jobs in its supply chain each year - giving a major boost to the Hertsmere economy.

BAM, which has more than 400 employees in Hemel Hempstead, expects to recruit more staff following its appointment by Legal & General, Sky and NBCUniversal to build the studio.

The company was chosen for its expertise on large scale sustainable project. During construction BAM will look to offer apprenticeships, training and work placements.

James Wimpenny, chief executive of BAM Construct UK, said: “We are proud to be an integral partner to achieving such an ambitious and sustainable scheme that will not only support the growth of the creative economy in the UK but lead the way for others.

“This world class scheme reflects our own goals to be net zero carbon by 2030, to assist our clients in delivering net zero development and to enhance the lives of local communities, creating added social value.”

Sky Studios Elstree will house 13 sound stages and become home to a range of film and TV productions from Sky Studios and NBCUniversal and is expected to attract £3 billion of production spend over the first five years of its operation.

The studio will not use gas or fossil fuels to power day-to-day running of the site instead using renewable energy. BAM Energy will help Sky maximise the solar energy that is generated and used by the new studio. In addition, the studio will not allow any single-use plastic in its operations on site and will also harvest rainwater for use around the site.

Caroline Cooper, chief operating officer of Sky Studios, said: “Working with BAM, we will select materials and use construction methods that support our goal to build the most sustainable film and TV studio in the world.”

“Sky Studios Elstree will enable us to produce more and more Sky Originals for our customers and is a key cornerstone of Sky’s commitment to become net zero carbon by 2030.”

George Shepherd, Senior Development Manager at Legal & General said: “The creative industries and regional investment continue to be key components in supporting Britain’s bounce back.

“As we begin construction, we are delighted to be working with BAM to bring forward this scheme, which is a great match for backing our pension promises.

“The climate crisis continues to be top of the agenda for Legal & General and this project will use sustainable materials, renewable energy and waste reduction to meet these aims as we forge our route towards a net-zero carbon portfolio.”
