Many took to Facebook to voice their support of the event while some were left unimpressed by the festivities.
Dacorum Borough Council put on a day of free activities on Sunday to mark the countdown to Christmas and celebrate the official opening of the town centre following its regeneration.
Although the fireworks had to be cancelled due to the bad weather the Christmas lights switch on went ahead along with events on the new Rainbow Stage.
But some were left feeling rather bah humbug about the day.
Darren Smith post on Facebook said: “Go to see the lights switch on only to find all already on except tree lights what a let down thanks Dacorum Borough Council.”
But others jumped to defend the event. Clair Gower said: “The atmosphere was lovely.”
While Nick Spice posted: “We had a great time.
“Some people are sadly afflicted with a negative attitude anything and like to moan.”
Speaking after the event Councillor Graham Sutton, who oversees planning and regeneration, told Hemeltoday said: “This is what our town centre improvements were all about – getting everybody together and really bringing the high street alive. It was a lovely buzzing, community atmosphere and everyone was enjoying themselves, making the most of the free activities on throughout the day.
“Our thanks to Marlowes and Riverside shopping centres, the Snow Centre and Phasels Wood Activity Centre for helping to put on Hemel Hempstead’s biggest Christmas celebration ever. We’ll make sure we use the fireworks at a future event, so there’s more to look forward to.”
