Up to 434bhp for 2018’s facelifted SUV

Next year’s cosmetically refreshed Porsche Macan will also be available with a new range of turbocharged V6 petrol engines producing between 325bhp and 434bhp.

Co-developed with Audi and replacing the Macan’s current 3.0-litre and 3.6 turbo V6s, the direct-injection petrol engines have already appeared in the second-generation Porsche Panamera.

In the Macan they will be offered in two sizes, 2.9 and 3.0 litres. The smaller engine is actually the most powerful of the two courtesy of its larger turbocharger and lower 10.5:1 compression ratio.

In the Panamera S this engine produces 434bhp at 5650rpm and 405lb ft of torque at 1750rpm. That’s 40bhp more than the output of the 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine currently powering the Macan Turbo, in which it develops an identical torque figure at a lower 1350rpm.

In the second-gen base Panamera, where it’s already in use, the 2018 Macan’s 3.0-litre standard-turbocharger engine generates 325bhp at 5400rpm and 332lb ft of torque at 1340rpm. That compares to 335bhp at 5500rpm and 339lb ft at 1450rpm from the older 3.0-litre engine in the existing Macan S.

Clearly, however, the new engine is obviously eminently tuneable because in the Audi S4 the same unit produces 349bhp at 5400rpm and 369lb ft at 1370rpm.
