We all want some luxury, but a luxury car might be nearer than some of the other luxurious goods or services you may covet. New cars depreciate fast, and some of the losses incurred at this top end can be eye-watering in the first few years. To show you what you could possibly afford, we’ve picked our favourite half dozen luxurious cars, and here they are, counting down to our top choice.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The smaller-engined E-Class models can get a touch noisy by the standards of these cars, so if you can find the money go for a more powerful performer. Whichever you go for, you’re guaranteed a sumptuous cabin filled with top-end equipment. The ride is equally luxuriant, ensuring you will arrive in style, totally relaxed.

Jaguar XF

We’ve chosen the 3.0-litre diesel since it’s smoother than the 2.2-litre, and smooth is what you want with this great British Jaguar. It makes an interesting alternative to the German competition and if you like a car that handles then you’ll be loving your XF. The cabin may not be quite as luxurious as some of the competition, but throw in a long, cross-country journey and you won’t even notice.

BMW 7 Series

Again, we’ve gone for the 3.0-litre diesel because it has so much effortless punch to it. BMW prides itself on the handling of its cars, and the big 7 Series does handle well. The downside is that it has a ride which is equally firm, perhaps a touch more than you’d like in a luxury limo. Most models come with lots of boxes ticked, so you can enjoy someone else’s choices and depreciation.

Audi A6

This is one of the best cabins you can find, with top-drawer design, materials and execution. It’s a handsome car from the outside too, with a ride quality that fits that exclusive image really well. It isn’t the ultimate driver’s car, but you can sit back in quiet luxury and revel in all the things the A6 does so well.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

It’s still over £30k, but that’s a huge drop from where it was just three years ago. And for that you get an S-Class. What more need be said? This is total luxury, with a large cabin just filled with things to make your life better and more enjoyable. You’ll fee pleasantly removed from the world as you whisper along and we think the S-Class is well worth the money.

BMW 5 Series

We’ve counted down to what we see as the best value proposition out there. The 5 Series is just one of the best luxury cars on the market, and here it is for about £16k with really reasonable miles on it. The engine range is terrific, although we are big fans of the 520d diesel, and the cabin is great, and very well equipped. Most previous owners tend to tick the trinket boxes too, so fill your boots. If you can find the right one, we’d add Variable Damper Control to make the handling even better and smoother.
