Car journos like to pretend they work hard and have an awful job. Sometimes they’re not wrong. Many of the press bashes in exotic-looking Euro-destinations start and finish on the same day, necessitating many red-eyed hours spent at airports and being squeezed into economy-class seats.
But sometimes they do have fun in their job. Often, they’ll get a big dollop of it at the end of the year when it’s time to work out the best of this, that or the other for year-ending special features.
Here’s one: the best driver’s car on sale in Britain in 2017. That meant taking nine of the finest performance cars, not just in the UK but the world, to Wiltshire’s challenging Castle Combe circuit.
Castle Combe is difficult at the best of times, with more than one high-level-bravery corner to be negotiated. When it’s soaking wet and cold, as it was when our hardy testers Matt, Dan and Mauro girded their respective loins for this year’s roundup, the challenge ramps up several notches.
Then you add in the amount of horsepower that was being unleashed from such stellar combatants as the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, Aston Martin DB11 V8, BMW M4 CS, Caterham Seven 420R Donington Edition, Honda Civic Type-R, McLaren 720S, Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate, Mercedes-AMG GT-R and Porsche 911 GT3, and you can almost start to feel sorry for road testers.
But when you watch this video, the emotions you’re more likely to feel are unbridled hatred and extreme jealousy. It’s a good ‘un.
