The owners of a village store and coffee shop in Potten End have received a Hero of Hertfordshire award for helping others during the coronavirus lockdown.

Cedar, which opened its doors for the first time in May 2019 having undergone a makeover, has been recognised for the work it has done during the coronavirus pandemic.

Heroes of Hertfordshire is a joint initiative between the High Sheriff and the Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, and the Mayor of Dacorum, cllr Terry Douris, visited the shop to present them with their award.

Cedar’s owner, Fiona Rowland, said: “This award is wonderful recognition of the extremely hard work and extended hours that have gone into serving the community by the whole team here at Cedar.

“The community of Potten End and the surrounding areas has been absolutely fantastic too, patient, understanding and always smiling.”

During the pandemic, Cedar has remained open with its usual offering including takeaway hot food and drink.

Twice weekly fresh fruit and vegetables have been added, with an extensive range supplied by local fruitier Michael Smith.

A free home delivery service has been put in place too manned by volunteers in the community so that the elderly and vulnerable need not venture out.

Fiona added: "Through the support of Hertfordshire Country Council and in particular councillor Terry Douris, we have been able to add a new freezer and fridge which has meant we’ve been able to offer a wider range of fresh chilled produce and frozen meals.

“We’re only a small shop but we manage to pack a lot in. We have over 50 local suppliers from our local coffee roaster to locally designed greetings cards, local honey, locally baked bread and pastries, local sauces, jams and even a local, award winning chocolatier too.

"We’re very lucky that we’re able to contribute to the local business ecosystem."

For many in Potten End and the surrounding areas Cedar has been their lifeline.

The efforts of the Cedar team have not gone unnoticed by their customers either.

Rosario said: "You and your family have made this village a better place. You help everyone and also encourage others to be better with your example. A tiny ginat, that’s what you are!”

Emyr added: “Fiona and the team, you’re a huge ray of sunshine in all our lives. What you’re doing really hold the village together and makes a big difference to hundreds of people’s lives. Thank you."

Sarah said: "Cedar, Potten End Village Store and Coffee Shop is a symbol of hope during the crisis prepared to change their business model to a greengrocers which entailed longer hours.

"Ensuring treats were available when there was none elsewhere. Plus deliveries for those who were in isolation.

"Above all the cheerfulness and kindness that was consistent and genuine.”
