As a mark of respect, Dacorum Borough Council is flying flags at half-mast.

In a statement from the council it said: "Our thoughts are with Her Majesty and members of the Royal Family at this time.

"We understand that many residents will wish to convey their own tributes and messages of condolence at this time. Messages of Condolence can be made online via the Royal Website or the Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Her Majesty’s personal representative in the county, www.lord-lieutenant-herts.org.uk."

Books of Condolence have been opened at The Forum in Hemel Hempstead and Civic Centre in Berkhamsted.

A spokesperson for Dacorum Borough Council, said: “As The Forum is open to the public to access the library, we have taken the decision to open a physical book of condolence for those who are not online.

"Our risk assessments for the building have been updated to facilitate this and we encourage members of the public wishing to express their condolences to send a message to the Royal Family via the online Book of Condolence.”

The Books of Condolence will be available at the following times:

> The Forum, Hemel Hempstead - Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm until Friday, April 16.

>Berkhamsted Civic Centre - Tuesday to Friday between 10am and 2pm until Friday, April 16.

Dacorum Borough Council recognises that some residents may want to lay floral tributes to express their grief.

The Royal Household has suggested that, as an alternative to flowers, some people may wish to make a donation to one of His Royal Highness’s patronages, details of which can be found on the Royal Website.

On the day of the funeral, Saturday, April 17, a National Minute’s Silence will be observed at 3pm.

Chief Executive of Dacorum Borough Council, Claire Hamilton said: “We hope that residents will join us in remembering the remarkable service and life of His Royal Highness, The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"We will be writing a letter of condolence to the Royal Family on behalf of the people of Dacorum to express our sadness and to let them know that our thoughts are with them at this sad time.”
