Sweet Charity at The Court Theatre

THE Court Theatre continues its diverse line-up of shows by bringing Sweet Charity to the venue from Tuesday.

The story, made famous on film by Shirley MacLaine in Bob Fosse’s 1969 musical, charts the life of looking-for-love dancer, Charity Hope Valentine. She is paid to partner the lonely and single through foxtrots and waltzes in what was considered, at the time, a morally dubious profession.

Charity longs for love and has more than her fair share of disappointments. After failing to find a new job through an employment agency, Charity meets shy Oscar Lindquist. They strike up a relationship, but Charity does not reveal what she does for a living. When she finally does tell Oscar he dumps her leaving the lonely living hopefully ever after.

Director Jamie Scott who has previously led The Who’s Tommy and The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, also at The Court, brings to this classic musical to the Court for the Tring Festival Company.

This is a real family effort with Jamie’s wife Jayne on board as choreographer as well as appearing as a dancer with their daughter Emily.

The cast includes Jodie Holley as Charity in her first lead role, Court Theatre favourite Andy Faber as her love interest Oscar and one of the strongest group of dancers to appear at the Court in recent years.

With numbers such as Big Spender, Rhythm of Life and If they Could See Me Now.

Sweet Charity runs from June 19 until June 23. For tickets call the box office 07543 560 478 or online www.courttheatre.co.uk
