On the bill this month is Manon – an emotionally intense ballet set in 18th century Paris – as part of the autumn season at the RoyalOpera House. Shown in cinemas on October 16, the ballet brings Manon’s story vividly to life, evoking the brutality and decadence described in Abbé Prévost’s famous novel.

A three-act opera makes it to the big screen days later on October 27 with the Royal Opera House’s I Due Foscari, starring Plácido Domingo of the Three Tenors . The taut, sombre drama is based on a play by Byron set in 15th-century Venice.

Finally, as part of the National Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the 2011 broadcast of Frankenstein directed by Oscar-winner Danny Boyle will be screened on October 30s.

This recent classic stars 2012 Olivier Award Best Actor winner and Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, b est known for his role in Boyle’s Trainspotting.

The highbrow screenings are available nationwide through its Empire Extra programme.
