Folk’s in focus, so John’s whistling up a special workshop

On Saturday museum visitors will be able to get involved in a day of morris dancing, with demonstrations by the city’s long-established group at 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

If you are feeling inspired, you can learn to morris dance yourself at 2.45pm when the group will be on hand to teach you the steps.

Then on Sunday John will lead a workshop on how to play the tin whistle.

The multi-instrumentalist, part of the Devine Family trio of Irish music experts, has been learning, teaching and performing traditional Irish music in the area for more than 30 years.

The session lasts from 3pm to 4.30pm and is free, but if you want to take part you will need your own tin whistle – you can buy one from the shop at the Hatfield Road museum.

The museum’s current Folk In Focus exhibition features memories of a century of folk music and dance in the district and runs until the end of the month.
