Re: Wheelie Bin 'woe'

From: Mrs Margaret Bull
Hemel Hempstead
Views: I had to send this letter to Dacorum council today .I cannot believe that as a country we cannot produce a wheelie bin or arrange for a replacement! Not only that we cannt make complaints to the council as the website is inferior .ALL THIS FOR AN EXTORTIONATE COUNCIL TAX. please read on.......
Dear Sir I am a council tax payer and wish you to take this as a formal complaint:
1.We recently had a letter from you stating you were taking us to court (or a balliff on our door) for council tax arrears. When my husband rang we were told this was an error on your part.Funny enough THREE other people in my office had the same problem! No formal written apology from you
2. This week we had our black bin emptied and the dustmen broke the lid off of the bin AND TOOK IT WITH THEM.Hence I have no lid, hot weather ,flies and foxes all around this area. We rang Cupid green today and were told that they had been waiting 8 weeks for a delivery from SPAIN !So now we cant even make our own bins in this country!!! They therefore said that we would not be getting a bin for this reason as they have none (Dare I say it but I have seen plenty in COSTCO) Not forgetting that this whole thing is not my error but that of your employees.
3.I tried to make a formal complaint on line and guess what ........... 'the page cannot be displayed' popped up! Nothing new there then Dacorum don't even have a decent website or customer care centre! What do we pay these incredible amounts of council tax for ? So now I am reporting MY BLACK BIN (which I hasten to add is extra large because of the amount of people in the house) as a HEALTH AND SAFETY HAZARD . I therefore would like this reported to the ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH department immediately as I feel that this is a high risk to my neighbours and also to the THREE babies aged 16 months(twins) and 6 months that are in my house . I would expect a response to this email within 24 hours due to the nature of the complaint.
your sincerley Mrs M Bull RGN,BSc(hons)

Re: Council slammed for scrapping dog poo bags:CLICK HERE to see report

From: Chris Driscoll
Alicante, Spain

Views:I would just like to comment on the article regarding Poo bags for dogs (18th June) If it was Mrs Reidy's decision to have 2 dogs, surely it is up to her to provide dog poo bags. It isn't up to the council. Do the council provide her with toilet paper for herself? I think the answer would be no, so why should they provide bags for the dogs. They do sell these bags in the shops and any responsible owner would buy them.

Re : Knives

From: Elizabeth Smyth
Hemel Hempstead Email:
Views: We are extremely concerned at the terrible rise in kknife crime across our capital, and no doubt across the whole country. This is not really suprising as in our high street alone, out of all those retailers who sell knives, only one has them locked in a cabinet. If by chance the powers that be, read this communication, please consider 'locking up your knives'. In A@E departments across the country half of all knife wounds are caused by kitchen knives. I find it irritating that Mothers are accused of being careless with knives - but tell me what is right about displaying knives (often out of sight of till staff) on open displays, untagged, unprotected. Stop and think about it - imagine the buzz these kids are getting stroling into a department store on a busy Saturday morning and tucking a knife under a hoody - and now we have another knife on our streets. There is no legislation in place that requires retailers put knives in cabinets. The legislation as it stands covers stop and search, rights to search, advertisement of combat knives etc, but there is no legal requirement to protect knives at the point of sale in every high street in the land. We have to do every small thing possible to prevent knives getting on to the high street.

Views: My vilage Post office is on the area closure list. We have one shop, if the PO goes there is every chance the shop will close as well. Fine if you can drive, I can't. Empty shops in Tring

From: Michael Buckley
Tring

Views: I moved to Tring last May and in the main have been very pleased with my decision. However, a slight concern is the closure of so many retail outlets in Tring High street. With the relocation of Specsavers, three shops on the busy junction of teh Hight Street and Frogmore Street are now empty as well as several others further along. Tring has a thriving population and I wondered if any plans for alternative shops is in place or is is just going ot become a stalleite of Berkhamsted?

Re: Astley Cooper School on threat list:CLICK HERE to see report

From: clare Smith

Grovehill Hemel hempstead
Views: After reading the report against Astley Cooper school, I was appalled to find out it may close due to low GCSE levels. I have a son who is in year eight who is very happy there. The school is a visual arts college and therefore, has a strong creative background.
Through my experince i have found that due to its reputation of past years people are quick to judge and i have heard nothing but slatings aimed at this school. It can't be helped that this school is placed in an under priviliged area therefore, it does not always compare to other schools in wealthy parts of Hemel.
This school is a happy school with happy children who's well being is high priority resulting in well rounded children. If a child does not want to learn they won't and with the pressure of how many GCSE's they can obtain this will give them no more oppourtunity to gain a job.
I feel that Astley Cooper is never going to get a good rating for its achievements and only the parents who's children attend there will be the ones who should decide whether it is a good school.

From: Maureen Flint
Hemel Hempstead

Views: Dear Editor The Gazette is to be congratulated on keeping the flame of town twinning alight by supporting a group of children to take part in the recent international festival in Neu Isenburg and sending Gazette staff to cover the event. Whilst there could be a reluctance to send councillors on an all expenses paid trip to our twin town, the Dacorum Council should be more pro-active in encouraging schools and community groups to interact with Neu Isenburg, our twinning town who made a sizeable contribution to the Mayor's Buncefield Appeal. Is it lack of funds, even a minimal amount, that made Dacorum Council snub the recent invitation to Neu Isenburg, or is it for political reasons that that the Tory councillors want to distant themselves from Europe?

I am in shock as to why i pay my council tax every month and cannot understand why it takes phone call after phone call just to be lied to about a simple thing like having my rubbish removed once a fortnight. also i as told that there is a rubbish tip up the road where i could take my rubbish, well im quite willing to take all my rubbish up the tip if the council are willing to deduct the money i pay them for emptying my bins.

Views: Re: School Uniform I understand everyone has different views on this story. Yes everyone is struggling at the moment. But Lucy from Hemel does have two incomes coming into the house. I am a full time mum that works as I would not dream of milking the system. I am not on income support which I could be if I wanted to and I would probably get help but I wouldnt dream of it as I am capable of working as ALL full time mothers are. So Lucy if you have two incomes coming in imagine what its like if you only have one part time wage coming in. I have never ever been unemployed, I have paid my National Insurance and Tax for many years and have never claimed any benefits until my situation changed a few years ago, therefore I personally feel that I have paid enough money into the system over the years to get just that little bit back when I need help with my daughter's educational needs.

Re School uniform shock for mumCLICK HERE to see report

From: Lucy

Views: I do understand that being a single parent means that you have a limited income; however there are also many other parents in the same boat. I dont know any one person or family that has enough money and doesnt require any financial help. Yet they just have to get by. I have a husband who works; however the cost of living is so high that we have little left over after bills; however we dont receive funding for uniforms. I can only work part time due to being a full time parent, yet we still have to pay full price for everything.
There are many genuine people out there who genuinely need financial assistance, but there are many more who milk the system for what they can get. I am not saying that you are one of these people. I dont blame the government for cutting back. There are too many people receiving funding, benefits and assistance 'just because they can'. If this is a start to clamp down, then im all for it.

After having climbed the stairs with a parcel I was confronted by a queue of about 40 people. I took one look and turned back down the stairs. If this is to be the norm (I have been told by other people of the queues when they have visited) then this will definitely be my last visit. I would rather get my car out and drive to one of the sub offices around the town.

Diesel fuel worth £400 was siphoned from a blue and red articulated DAF lorry, and £200 worth of damage was caused to the vehicle, which was parked to the rear of the Matalan store. It is believed that a man who was walking his dog in the area may have seen the theft and officers would like to speak to him as he may have information that will help the investigation.

Re: School uniform costs

From: Gill Jones

Views: YET ANOTHER KICK IN THE TEETH FROM OUR LOCAL AUTHORITIES FOR LOW INCOME FAMILIES
My daughter is off to Senior School in September and as a working lone parent I went on line to apply for a voucher to help towards the costs of the school uniform which is in the region of £150 back in March but it said the voucher had to be spent within 3 months, so I decided to wait till May to apply as knowing my 11 year old she will have grown in that time.
So I went on line and it quotes "that one members decision" have decided to withdraw any help towards school uniform from April 2008.
Oh whoopi do, so how do I find this money now - increase in rent, increase in fuel, increase in council tax, increase in petrol, etc (too many increases for me to mention. The school my daughter is to attend is a 5 minute walk from my house has a uniform that cant be bought from the local cheaper option shops it has to be bought from a specialist shop, 2nd hand uniform is limited. What are we supposed to do, we try and budget at the beginning of the year for known costs but it is impossible when this type of thing happens and the help has been taken away?

**A notice on the Herts County Council website says: 'Please note that as of 1 April 2008 the discretionary scheme of necessitous clothing (help towards the cost of school uniform for families on low incomes) has been withdrawn, following a Members' decision. '

Views: Although I have on the most tenuous of links with Dacorum (I work for Steria), I was at the Eurofest in Neu-Isenberg as a guest of our twin town of Andrezieux-Boutheon. What the article online doesn't quite indicate is the intensely happy atmosphere throughout the town throughout the course of the big day on Saturday. People were communicating in whatever way that they could. If the citizens of towns across Europe can be friendly like this, we can eventaully ensure an end to war in Europe because of the connections that countries have forged between themselves independantly of their governments. An example of this is that although we have no formal connection with Neu-Isenburg, we in Soham have been invited by our common partner, and the network of friends begins to widen. Town Twinning? I'm all for it!

Views: I walked with my brother to Watford on the recent march to save our hospital with many others, Watford dont want us either. In the 1970's i went on a march with my late mother to save our hospital, we were then relieved when the hospital was reprieved good sense prevailing.
We had in Hemel 3 hospitals Bennetts End, St. Pauls and of course West Herts, we had a cancer wing, cardiac all facilities, bit by bit these have been chipped away hoping that the people wouldnt notice whats happening, less staff, apts changed to other hospitals. Bennetts End and St. Pauls now housing estates, new builds are going on all over the town, how many more with the Kodak building.
The government have also stated that they want more housing and have designated some of the green belt areas, so i expect we will be one of those. Being the largest town in Hertfordshire it beggars belief that we should lose our hospital, i wonder who is making money out of this! It seems very suspect to me. I would like to know who will be buying this land and when will we know, is it being sold privately, for more housing. If the people of Hemel and the surrounding areas all paid so much a week to keep the hospital running, maybe we could stop the closure it might make the powers that be sit up and take notice. Unfortunately time is running out as the A&E is supposed to be closing in October. The people are being left high and dry with no real thought about what the consequences will be for us, i expect that they dont really care, it seems to be all about business.

Egg Mystery

From: Gina Bull
Hemel Hempstead
Being EGGED ON… Someone answer me please… I know this is a silly question, I am even not expecting an answer but I have to ask anyway. Is anyone else digging in their garden or replanting garden pots, and here we go finding chicken eggs in their garden? (I told you it was a silly question)!
I have been prompted to write to you as other people have been here & seen this happen. None of us can think where they are coming from or what animal must be putting them in my garden, it is a total mystery. To make it even worse guess what, this is even sillier they are DATE STAMPED obviously the dates are un readable but they are definitely there.
We are finding this hard to work out as nowadays people are putting out rubbish in bins not black sacks any longer so an animal can't be scavenging bins to find them. Over the past 2 summers I have probably found about 10 to a dozen eggs. They are all raw & usually buried quiet deeply. At first I thought it was a joke & someone was playing tricks on me, but my garden is completely enclosed so no one is able to get in.
