Magical moments with music

Vancouver born trumpeter Jay Phelps was tutored by the Canadian city's top jazz and classical trumpeters and distinguished himself early on as the youngest band leader in the Vancouver International Jazz festival's history.

Now he is bringing his magic to the Old Town Hall’s Cellar Club in Hemel Hempstead from 8pm on Thursday November 24, writes Heather Jan Brunt

He is a trumpeter with an instantly recognisable warm and projecting tone and he has recorded with a veritable who’s who of international artists including Amy Winehouse, Charlotte Church, Jamie Cullum, Sir John Dankworth, Courtney Pine, Ray Brown, John Hendricks and George Benson.

As well as being a late night host and performer at London’s top venues, including Ronnie Scott’s, he regularly tours nationally and internationally with his own bands.

More recently he has been travelling and writing songs for his new album, due for release next year.

Although he has called London home for half his life, Jay is now based internationally, to expand and immerse himself in the world’s musical cultures.

He said: “Through travel I have literally been able to hear a lot of the world’s greatest music and musicians. It has broadened my understanding of music itself, in terms of its infinite variations, but more so the great deep spirit that finds its way to anyone’s heart and soul, that’s what I have wanted to know more and more about. Music is magic!”

See the magic for yourself at Jay’s concert.

Tickets cost £13, £11 and £10 and are available from the box office in the High Street, or by telephone 01442 228091, both open from noon to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. Or book online at www.oldtownhall.co.uk
