Kings Langley Players have got their Mojo back

The award winning play by Jez Butterworth was immediately dubbed a modern classic when it exploded onto the stage at the Royal Court in 1995 and a recent star studded revival in the West End earned rave reviews. Now Kings Langley Players are presenting it in the community centre at The Nap.

The Players director Sophie Palumbo saw the production in London and was mesmerised. She said: “I immediately knew it was a challenging piece of drama the Players could take on. We have a wonderful cast of talented actors and fantastically evocative staging. We want the audience to be transported to an underworld London, dark, dangerous and lawless.”

Mojo is a very grown up fairy tale about rival kingdoms, set in the days when rock n’ roll is becoming big business. Club owner Ezra refuses to sell his new singing discovery, ‘Silver Johnny’ to his powerful rival and as a result Ezra’s body is found in not one, but two dustbins and the club is placed under siege during a hot summer weekend.

What ensues is a power struggle between Ezra’s psychotic son ‘Baby’ and other members of the gang. The dialogue is fast and furious, the characters verbally ricochet off one another - their speech is authentic and colourful. Despite its dark theme of violent, damaged men, the play is wickedly funny and grippingly told.
