  • Cats Protection needs marshalls and walkers for a sponsored walk along the Grand Union canal between Apsley and Berkhamsted on Sunday, May 18, from 10.30am to 2pm.

  • All that's needed is enthusiasm and a liking for being out in the fresh air.

  • A gardener is needed to tend Bennetts End Community Centre gardens.

Regular weeding and grass-cutting, in addition to seasonal bedding work, will ensure the gardens are kept looking good.

  • Berkhamsted Arts Trust seeks a secretary, to work at home, ideally having a personal computer and access to the internet, for the work of co-ordinating arts organisations in the district.

The secretary is a contact point for the trust, which is an 'umbrella' organisation bringing together more than 20 groups to foster the arts.

Only two or three committee meetings are held each year in central Berkhamsted.

  • Age is no barrier to giving a hand at the Hospice of St Francis shop in Highfield, Hemel Hempstead.

A weekly session on a rota basis - morning or afternoon between 9.30am and 4.30pm - is all that's asked.

Volunteers are involved in sorting, labelling, selling goods and helping to tidy up. They will be trained to use the till.

  • Abbeyfield Society, which provides sheltered housing for elderly people who do not need nursing care, is looking for a health and safety committee member at the Sibleys Orchard, Leverstock Green, home. It is a commitment of six hours a week, at times to suit. There's also one monthly meeting to attend.
