It's a passport to a wider world - even if that world is only a few miles in diameter - and spells freedom.
But spare a thought for others, whose world might be bounded just by their own four walls, where even a walk in their own garden is not pos
sible.
Berkhamsted and Tring Stroke Support Group needs drivers for people who have been affected by strokes.
This friendly driver needs to be willing to use their own car to pick up one or two members every other Tuesday, between 10.15am and 1.30pm and transport them to and from the club.
And the driver is then welcome to stay and participate in the group's activities, if desired.
The club meets on alternate Tuesdays at The Social Centre in Bell Lane, Northchurch.
Dacorum Emergency Night Shelter also needs a friendly, reliable person with a pleasant nature.
The Hemel Hempstead-based organisation provides emergency accommodation for homeless people, as well as a hot breakfast and evening meal for people in the Dacorum area.
Here the drivers, on a once or twice-a-month rota, are needed to give about an hour of their time to collect donated food from M&S at the end of the working day (Monday to Saturday), 15 minutes after the store has closed and deliver to DENS and help to sort it.
If there is an excess, then that is taken to other needy organisations. There are no age or gender restrictions.
Turning from wheels to walking, Sportspace Dacorum Sports Trust needs Nordic Walk leaders.
Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking where the use of poles helps to tone and strengthen the upper body as well as the legs and has many benefits - burning up to 46 per cent more calories than ordinary walking, reducing tension in neck and shoulders and lessening impact on knees and joints.
The volunteers would need to be keen walkers - no previous experience is necessary - and be prepared to attend a two-day training course and then be available to lead walks for the Trust, which could be evening, weekend or daytime sessions.
The simple-to-learn social exercise technique is gaining popularity
throughout the world.
Walks are outdoors but would start from Sportspace at Hemel Hempstead or Berkhamsted.
The two-daytraining course is filling and is due to start next month, so early application is advisable, but other training would also be given.
Applicants must be over 18 and can be male or female.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Volunteer Centre Dacorum at The Roundhouse, Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead, or call 01442 247209 or email info@volunteerdacorum.org.
