  • Schools in Berkhamsted have banded together to provide each other with self-help.

  • Calling themselves the Ashlyns Family, the group brings first schools, middle and upper schools together under the one umbrella linking together Swing Gate, St Mary's Northchurch, Potten End, Westfield, Victoria, Greenway, Bridgewater, Thomas Coram a
    nd Ashlyns.

The aim is for volunteers to co-ordinate festivals and tournaments for schools within the family, providing coaching in areas of weakness within a particular school - during curriculum time or out of school hours.Various training opportunities are available for committed individuals.

High priority this week is for a multi-skilled sports coach to assist or lead small groups of pupils in various sports, within the first, middle and upper levels in Berkhamsted. The lower age limit is 18 years and a CRB check will be necessary.

  • Another opportunity with sporting connections is with Tring Beavers Swimming Club. The Beavers meet on Tuesday afternoons from 1.20pm to 2.20pm and exist to assist disabled people to exercise in the water and to encourage them to develop swimming skills.

Help is needed poolside and in the changing area. No particular skills are required but helpers need enthusiasm and to be able to swim in shallow water, without being especially strong. The lower age limit is 16 years.

  • Several opportunities exist with The Box Moor Trust to help with environmental education courses and projects. This will involve direct teaching, preparing courses, setting up and tidying away activities and appropriate training will be given on the job.

This is an ideal position for anyone interested in teaching and/or environmental education. Lower age limit 16 years.

One volunteer is needed to keep records, produce teachers' packs, set up educational tasks and do general administration jobs. The same person, or another, is needed for monitoring volunteer work and producing a newsletter for the other volunteers within the organisation.

Wildlife explorer group leaders and young leaders are also needed by the Trust to share their interest in nature and the outdoor environment with children aged eight to 16. Linked with the RSPB the Box Moor Bird Group has been going for six years and caters for a range of children in two popular Saturday morning groups and leaders are needed. The main session is 10am to 12.30 plus basic preparation and clean up outside session times. A CRB check will be needed and there is also a leaders' meeting every other month on a Tuesday evening.

  • Blind and partially sighted people in Berkhamsted enjoy their monthly meetings on the first Monday of each month. The 1066 Club meets at the Court House from 2.30pm to 4.30pm with refreshments, speakers and friendly chat. But helpers would be greatly appreciated either for general caring or for driving. A great sense of humour with lots of energy would be appreciated from friendly folk willing to help those less able than themselves.

  • The Berkhamsted Crime Prevention Panel is keen to attract new members to their bi-monthly meetings. Their aim is to promote Neighbourhood Watch as well as increase crime prevention awareness. A CRB check will be necessary. The group would also like a minutes' secretary for the meetings from 7pm to 9pm as well as the follow up work which the position entails.
