But it's not at all straightforward for a number of people, who need a companion to go out with them and 'make their day'.
In fact, no less than 15 men and women throughout Dacorum, who have learning difficulties, are at this moment waiting to hav
e a befriender introduced into their lives so they can look forward to getting out and about for a couple of hours.
Some are luckier - they have been enjoying the company of a volunteer befriender for several years, thanks to a scheme run by Mencap Dacorum.
It may happen that befriender and 'client' get along so well the arrangement lasts.
The number of those waiting for a special friend is going up all the time, says Elaine Precious, projects manager and befrienders co-ordinator for Mencap Dacorum.
Elaine has been involved in the organisation for many years and trains new volunteers, in a group or on a one-to-one basis.
For some, the training itself is a bonus and in Elaine's view it is a fantastic experience for younger volunteers planning to go to university.
Experience of working in the community is welcomed there.
People wanting to make a career change may also find the training and experience are assets for future workplaces.
An important aspect of the befriender scheme is that real care goes into the process of matching people together, says Elaine.
Times and days are flexible to suit both parties and out-of-pocket expense are paid.
Being a befriender can take up just a little of a volunteer's time, but that time is something that will make a world of difference to another person's life.
Mencap Dacorum is a busy and growing, modestly-sized charity keen to broaden the experience and skills among its trustees.
Part of an informal and friendly committee working in a small office in Hemel Hempstead Old Town, its work is concerned in creating friendship and leisure schemes for people with learning disabilities and providing support for their carers.
People with fundraising, publicity and marketing skills can be of great help, but otherwise it's a matter of having the interest.
Social events and a Christmas lunch are part of the support agenda.
