The fate of Tring's tip has been sealed by council chiefs who backed a recommendation to close the site.
On Monday (July 21) Herts County Council's cabinet agreed to shut down the depot under cost-cutting measures.
However, the Tringford Road base will not close before a new recycling facility is up and running in neighbouring village Aston Clinton.
The recommendation for closure was put forward by the council's waste management panel following a review of sites across the county.
It was met with fierce opposition from residents who signed petitions and sent letters of objection to council bosses.
Cabinet planning and waste chief Councillor Derrick Ashley said: "While we are keen to encourage recycling and want to make household waste recycling centres as accessible as possible for residents, we also have to operate within financial constraints."
The closure will save the council £188,000 each year.
But county and Tring town Councillor Nick Hollinghurst slammed the decision. "I am deeply disappointed. I think it is a serious error on the part of the county council.
"With fuel prices rising we should be moving to disperse access points to services not centralising them.
"Politics and finance has got in the way of protecting the environment," he said.
The Aston Clinton centre is expected to be ready by spring/summer next year.
Meanwhile, the cabinet decided to keep open a threatened site in Wiggenhall Road, Watford after land became available to extend the depot.
