Flowers will still bloom in a garden dedicated to world war heroes despite 'penny pinching' cutbacks.
Dacorum Borough Council has slashed its budget for plants across the area.
In Tring six flower beds inside The Memorial Garden off High Street will no longer be funded under money saving moves.
But Tring Town Council has stepped in to prevent t
he beds from being grassed over.
During a meeting on Monday (September 29) councillors agreed to take on responsibility for the flowers but accused the borough council of double taxation.
Although the town council will seek sponsorship for the works it is expected that taxpayers will still have to foot some of the bill.
Councillor Denise Rance said: "Dacorum Borough Council is cutting back on facilities and services in Tring quite a lot and double taxation is a term I would use."
It costs the borough council around £864 to pay for and plant the flowers.
Cllr Lloyd Harris described the move as shortsighted and penny pinching.
Cllr Barry Batchelor added: "We have got to show the community that we want to defend the memories of those who have given their lives for this country.
Berkhamsted Town Council also discussed taking on the responsibility of four flower beds in Coombe Gardens at a full council meeting on Monday.
The matter was referred to the Finance and Policy committee, but
councillors showed support to keep them.
Councillor Malcolm Allen said: "I think if we have the possibility to do something we should always examine it."
It was also suggested that various community groups be approached to see if they will take on the responsibility.
