Shoppers have thrown their weight behind a campaign to save the first free hour of car parking in Tring.
Liberal Democrat Councillors say they have had a massive response to a questionnaire on charges in the town centre car parks.
The survey was launched to gauge views after Tring Chamber of Commerce voted during its AGM to request that Dacorum Borou
gh Council begin
charging for the first two hours of parking in the town at the minimum rate (currently 50p).
Councillor Nick Hollinghurst said: "We have had an amazing response. So far we have had more than 425 responses and we are still sending out leaflets to homes.
"The vast majority are in favour of keeping the first hour free. Also the vast majority are saying that if they had to pay for the first hour they would shop less in Tring."
The chamber, made up of traders in the town, has since added that it supports the free hour of parking but voted for the option because it believes the borough council will scrap the free period as part of a review later this year.
However, a council spokesman said: "No decision has yet been made on the continuation of the free hour or any other charges."
The political party survey asks respondents to choose out of three options - to keep the free hour, introduce a two-hour rate at the minimum price of 50p or charge 30p for one hour and 50p for up to two hours.
The final results will be shared with Tring Town Council so that councillors can put forward their views on the issue during the borough council's review.
Charges at all of the borough's car parks will be discussed during a cabinet meeting next month (October).
