An unsuspecting Hemel Hempstead resident found he had travelled the world without ever leaving the town.
In a year-long prank, pals of Gary Courtenay, 26, took his photo around the globe snapping it in various locations.
They had pinched the original - a picture taken at his university graduation ceremony - from his home in Fields End.
Unknown to Mr Courtenay, it made its way from Italy and the Isle of Wight, to Abu Dhabi, Las Vegas and Thailand.
It was captured with famous landmarks including the Taj Mahal in India and the Statue of Liberty in New York, and with a string of
celebrities.
The most recent famous face pictured with 'Gary' was Oasis star Liam Gallagher.
Other celebs include X Factor stars Alexandra Burke and JLS, chat show host Jeremy Kyle, Eastenders actor Shaun Williamson, Happy Days legend
Henry Winkler and singer Charlie Simpson of Busted and Fightstar.
Gary, who is training to become a primary school teacher, only found out about the prank when more than 100 photos were uploaded onto social networking website Facebook.
He said: "I couldn't believe my eyes, I was totally shocked and overwhelmed at the same time.
"I wasn't angry at all, I actually felt privileged that it was my photo.
"It's easily the funniest prank anyone's ever played on me."
