Part of Hemel Hempstead town centre was evacuated today (Thursday, August 28) after a fire erupted at a disused pub.
Fire crews were called to the Hogshead on Marlowes at around 1pm as smoke bellowed from the empty building.

Eyewitness Sean Andreas, 11, said: "There was alot of smoke and it looked like the windows were going to blow out, one had already smashed."

Police evacuated the surrounding area amid fears the fire would explode though the windows.

The blaze is believed to have started in a room upstairs above the bar and thought to have been accidental.

It is understood the building has recently been used by squatters.
