A couple who won £1million on the lottery were playing Who Wants to be a Millionaire on the night of their big win.
Trina and Mark Myatt played the computer game with friends on New Year's Eve, not knowing they had matched six numbers on that night's Lotto draw.

When they realised they'd scooped £1,014,308, the Hemel Hempstead millionaires kicked off the new year by taking their boys on a shopping spree in Toys R Us.

The splurge was the next best thing to buying a toy shop for Alexander, eight, and three year old Oliver, a promise Mark said he would keep if he ever won the lottery.

He said: "I had promised my eldest son that I would buy him a toy shop of his own if we ever won the lottery.

"I did have a lot of backtracking to do at the weekend although he has still done very well.

"You can't move for toys in our house at the moment."

The couple say the cash has not tempted them to move house, as self-employed builder Mark, 39, has spent four years creating their 'dream home' in Leverstock Green.

Trina, 38, said: "We've just finished expanding the house and it's just how we wanted it.

"It's going to be so nice to pay off the mortgage and just sit back and enjoy it."

Mark added: "We both love the area and that's where our family is. So I'd say we'll probably stay around."

Mark and Trina were born and bred in the town and are former students of Hemel Hempstead School and Astley Cooper School, respectively.

Trina, who works for an IT firm in Chesham, said she was looking forward to cutting her hours to spend more time with her family.

A brand new Mercedes is due for delivery at the Myatt's today (Wednesday) and a luxury family holiday is next on their wish list.

"It's an unbelievable feeling realising you have all six numbers," said Trina.

"It's complete shock and numbness, disbelief and excitement."

Mark added: "I always had this thing, it sounds stupid, but the Delboy in me always thought 'we'll win the lottery' and now it's happened, it's brilliant."
