Watford cut down Blades

Watford's return to Vicarage Road was a happy one.

Playing their first game of 2010 at WD18, Malky Mackay's men ended a seven game winless streak with a convincing 3-0 defeat of Sheffield United in a re-arranged fixture.

New defender Martin Taylor made his debut at centre back in a game that saw Tom Cleverley, Heidar Helguson and Don Cowie get their names on the scoresheet.

Following a long range effort that rattled the woodwork, Cleverley beat a hesitant defence to get on the end of Taylor's long ball and bundle the ball past Mark Bunn for the 39th minute opener.

Helguson doubled the lead on 55 minutes when the Icelandic striker capitalised on another mix-up, slotting home when one-on-one with Bunn.

Scotsman Cowie made sure of the points when his long-range free kick somehow evaded United and Watford players alike and ended up nestling in the back of the net.

Mackay was delighted with the win, which lifted the Hornets up to 12th.

He said: "It was great to get a clean sheet, playing against a strong outfit who are up at the top of the table.

"It was great to get a convincing result against them in front of our home fans.

"It's about performance at the end of the day – it's about players standing up and being counted and tonight every one of them wanted the ball and fought their corner."

The golden boys are at Watford this Saturday in another Championship game.
