Hemel Stags have handed contracts to two more players, with Eddie Mbaraga and Jake Hobbs adding to head coach Troy Perkins’ ever-growing squad.

Perkins said: “Eddie has been with the club for five seasons and been one of our most consistent performers over that time.

“He came through a good system at the Broncos and he is a very talented player. He can play back row or prop, he has got good footwork for a big man, is a damaging fringe runner and can find the try line.

“He was our second best try scorer last season.”

Hobbs, meanwhile, has come from a rugby union background but he is working hard on making the change to rugby league.

“Jake has had a really good pre-season and has earned a contract,” said Perkins. “He has been playing at professional club Ealing RFC but he wanted a new challenge and wanted to come and have a trial.

“He has impressed me with his attitude and he has good skills and will be a good addition in the centres or second row.

“He is still new to rugby league but he is improving all the time and I think he will develop into a decent player at this level.”

With the start of the season only a few months away, the Stags have also confirmed two pre-season fixtures against London Broncos and Gateshead Thunder on January 27 and February 16, respectively.

Perkins said: “Pre-season fixtures give all our players a chance to push for selection in the starting team in our first Northern Rail Cup fixture on March 3.

“These games will be an excellent test and I am looking forward to getting started with our first season in Championship 1.”
