This is one of the important ranking event in the BJA (British Judo Association) year and hence attracts many of the top ranked UK judoka and England Squad members.

Star of the day undoubtedly goes to Lewis Fryer (34kg) who competes in the ‘A bands’. In a group of 16 judoka Lewis was unbeaten through four rounds to reach the final which he won with a waza-ari hold.

Evie Jacobs (U36kg) followed with three wins, just losing out in the final to take a silver medal.

Pre-Cadets Gergu Berendi (U38kg) had a couple of good wins with the latter being a waza-ri hold to take the bronze medal. Hannah Niven (U44kg) also won a bronze after a waza-ri win though to the final four.

Cadet Michael Fryer (U60kg) took a silver after three wins and a very close final.

Coach Laurie Rush was very proud and said: “Special mention for the two fifth place lads who fought exceptionally well, Haydn with some lovely ippons and Charlie fighting at his new weight”

Also in a group of 16 judoka, Pre-Cadet Haydn moved into repechage after fighting the UK number two, he went on to win his next three rounds (with a couple of spectacular ippons enroute) before finding himself in the bronze medal fight back with the England Squad member.

Cadet Charlie had just moved up to 55kg and was pleased to reach the bronze medal fight which (despite being bottom of the weight category) he controlled throughout the bout and was unlucky to to succumb to a hold down.

Rush Judo is a family run Judo Club. They train at their permament dojo in Ashlyns School, Berkhamsted. Contact Laurie Rush on 07949 609569 for more information or check out the website www.rushjudo.co.uk.
