Olympic hopes in the balance for Whitlock

GYMNASTICS: A teenage gymnast is at last chance saloon as he attempts to secure a place at this summer’s Olympic Games.

Commonwealth Games medallist Max Whitlock, who lives on Adeyfield Road and is a former Longdean School pupil, is currently competing as part of Team GB at the London Prepares event at the O2 Arena.

Max and his team-mates need to finish in the top four of the competition in order to book a place at London 2012.

The squad have been training hard for their last shot at qualification and recently returned from a training camp in Lowestoft, Suffolk.

They are expected to secure a top four spot and any other outcome would come as a major disappointment.

The GB team had the chance to secure their place in the Games at the World Championships in Japan in October last year.

The competition acted as an Olympic qualifying event, with the top eight squads ensuring their presence in London.

GB finished 10th, however, meaning Max and the rest of the squad now need a strong showing at the O2 if they are to take their place at the summer’s showcase event.

It would come as a major blow should Max fail to earn a place at the Games after the young star bagged two silver medals and a bronze at the Commonwealth games in Delhi in 2010.
