Job done: Ladies clinch league title

Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club celebrated their first promotion of the season at the weekend after the ladies 1sts were crowned league champions after clinching two wins.

On Saturday they won 4-0 against Shefford and Sandy with the goals coming from Sarah Brydon, Leanne Keatley, Deb Walker and Melissa Morton, while player-of-the -match honours went to Helen Morton for applying great pressure throughout.

Then on Sunday they triumphed 2-0 against Blueharts to secure promotion as the league champions with a game to spare and safely clear of local rivals Tring in second place.

It means they will be playing their hockey in the Five Counties Premier Division next term.

Elsewhere for the club at the weekend, the men’s 1sts won 3-2 against WGC, powered by a Pete Allam brace and an Ed Holderness strike.

They face a decisive game this weekend when they play second-placed side Hertford in a winner-takes-all clash.

The men’s 3rds are in a battle at the other end of the table and after a slow start to the season have reeled off three wins on the bounce to pull themselves clear of the relegation zone.

Last weekend they beat Shefford and Sandy 1-0 on Saturday (David Wells) and beat Stevenage 3-2 on Sunday (David Wells, 2, Paul Dubenski). Another win this weekend could make them safe.

A youthful men’s 4ths, containing five players under the age of 16, drew 2-2 (Duncan Hodges, Toby Payton) with West Herts.

The ladies’ 3rds had a tough game against Potters Bar but came away with a 1-0 win (Mari Thomas).

The Men’s 2s played a late game against West Herts and lost 6-4 in an exciting game.

The ladies 2nds had a hard-fought game with second-placed West Herts, and were on the wrong side a 1-0 scoreline. Player of the match was Alison Krafft.

In other results, the ladies’ 4ths lost 2-0 to Letchworth and the men’s 5ths fell 4-1 to Welwyn.
