Belting display form karate hot-shots

Dacorum’s Seishinkai Shotokan Karate International groups put in a fine showing at the 2012 Portsmouth Open Karate Tournament – of the most prestigious competitions in the annual karate calendar.

It was the tournament’s 42nd staging, and the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth was packed with competitors and spectators who witnessed an excellent display of top class karate.

One of Dacorum’s stand-out victories came in the U16 team kata event, where the Hemel Hempstead team of Thomas Carson, Cristy Nash and Olivia Christodoulou picked up an impressive gold.

This was quickly followed by a win for the Hemel adult kata team of Adam Cockfield, Daniel White and Aaron Gould.

Vicky Adams and Rachael Houlton then won both the kata and kumite events in their respective categories – Adams winning gold in the black-belt division and Houlton triumphing in the brown-belt division.

Leah Groom completed the gold medal haul by winning the ladies’ 16 and 17-year-olds’ competition in the sparring section of the cadet category.

Silver medals, meanwhile, were won by Tom Colbourne, Cameron West, and the ladies sparring team of Houlton, Adams and Groom, with bronze medals going to Matt Gilling and Paul Sheehy.

Fourth place trophies were awarded to the adult’s B kata team of Sam Richards, Stacey Barton and Danny Richards, and Paul Sheehy for his efforts in the lower grades kata event.

Worldwide chief instructor Malcolm Phipps 8th Dan, who is also the Hemel Hempstead instructor, said: “I was very impressed and extremely pleased with my young charges. Seven champions in this very high class tournament is indeed another huge success.

“It has been an absolutely wonderful year and indeed one of the very best in our thirty-five year history in Hemel Hempstead.”
