Ju-jitsu coach thrown paratrooper challenge
A full time ju-jitsu coach is swapping his black belt for a rucksack to take on an army-style challenge.
Mark Thomas, who runs Fudo Shin Ju-jitsu in Hemel Hempstead, will wear a 35lb rucksack for a 10k race in Yorkshire in aid of Help for Heroes after he was egged on by an ex-army mate.
Mark, 43, will run with former paratrooper Peter Lavelle and three other friends, two of whom train at Fudo-Shin, at the Para 10 Endurance March at the Catterick Garrison.
And he admitted he is nervous about doing the race, which is used as part of the selection process for the paras.
"It's a real challenge for me," said Mark, who has been suffering with a knee problem for two years.
"Being ju-jitsu practitioners we are ju-jitsu fit, not running fit!
"It doesn't come naturally me."
Second Dan Mark has lost 1.5 stone since beginning training in April, shortly after coming out of hospital for an operation on his knee.
He has run Fudo Shin at Sportspace for almost two years. To find out more about the club or to sponsor Mark, visit the website at www.fudo-shin.co.uk
