More than 400 students representing the four Hertfordshire Further Education colleges - Oaklands, Hertford Regional, West Herts and North Hertfordshire - turned out in force to compete for the Inter-FE Games annual trophy.

A chilly spring day formed the backdrop to the day with indoor and outdoor sports taking place at the Hertfordshire Sports Village at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield.

The Games provide a fantastic opportunity for everyone to take part and compete; the range of competitions included those for the SEN students were all hard fought and competitive.

West Herts College won the overall trophy but all the colleges put in some great performances.

A lively dance performance by West Herts College students got things started and presentations by each of the colleges inspired the competitors. Play followed from 10.30am to 2.30pm and the event ended with a closing ceremony that celebrated the day of sport.

The continued success of the Games is down to effective partnerships between the four colleges, the National Governing Bodies of Sport involved and the massive team of Hertfordshire volunteers from across the county. The Herts Sports and Physical Activity Partnership (HSP) funds and coordinates the Games with these partners.

Jane Shewring, the HSP strategic lead for sport was really pleased with the success of the day and thanked everyone involved in making such a fantastic day of sport possible.

As the final medals were being awarded, Jane said: “Today’s FE Games have been fantastic.

“To see so many young adults actively involved in competitive sport here at the Hertfordshire Sports Village has been inspiring and everyone involved, including all the volunteers, officials, staff and participants have contributed to that.

“The competitiveness has been intense but friendly and I congratulate everyone who took part.”
