Berko maintain the momentum in style

IT was another good weekend for Berkhamsted as they picked up where they left off last week, with five wins from seven games and 7 and an impressive haul of goals.

Berko hit the net 31 times and conceded just 11, with the men’s third XI bagging the result of the day – a 14-0 thrashing of Potters Bar.

It was certainly a weekend to remember for the Holderness family, as father Jamie and son Ed both bagged their first league goals for the club.

Men’s second XI stalwart Jamie finally hit the target after 40 years of playing, while Ed struck on his debut for the fifths.

After last week’s whitewash, Berkhamsted were keen to keep up the momentum, and the men’s thirds put in a scintillating display to crush Potters Bar.

Berko came out of the blocks with all guns blazing and found themselves 5-0 up after just 10 minutes.

James Barron started the blitz, before adding a further three goals before half-time. Iwan Thomas also bagged a hat-trick and Ben Moorhouse notched a brace as Berko took a 9-0 lead into the break.

Man of the match Barron took his personal tally to seven goals after the interval, and Will Roen-Tate completed the rout

The ladies’ first XI, meanwhile, picked up a convincing 3-0 win over St Albans.

Molly Beard laid on goals for both Claire Barrett Mould and Abi Lawlor, before Faye Potton pounced to wrap up the win after the break.

Not to be outdone, the Berko ladies seconds claimed a 4-0 win in a hard-fought victory over Bedford.

Rachel Vickery gave Berko the lead in the first half, and Berko made sure of the points with a flurry of second half strikes.

Elsewhere, the men’s seconds dug deep to record a 5-3 win over Broxbourne.

With the scores locked 3-3 at half-time, Jamie Holderness provided the moment of the match after the break as he bagged his first goal in four decades, before Berko wrapped up the win late on.

The men’s fifths also had the winning feeling as they saw off Letchworth 3-1.

A young Berko side took a 1-0 lead into half-time courtesy of Steve Redman. Letchworth hit back, but a second Berko effort, followed by a late strike from Ed Holderness, sealed the win.

It was not such good news for the Berko men’s firsts, however, as they lost 3-2 to Winchmore Hill and Enfield.
