Herts Stags maul Surrey in emphatic win

Hertfordshire Stags 50 Surrey U20 8

HERTS put on a fine display of attacking rugby to overcome Surrey in their second fixture in the RFU National U20 Championship.

In a marked contrast to the stuttering performance in the first fixture against Sussex, Herts scored eight tries in a fluent display to take the win.

Herts got off to a flying start when Ashley Boyle jinked through a gap to score under the posts.

With 20 minutes on the clock, Rorie Day fed Tom Banks who crossed the line to take the home side into a 12-0 lead.

Herts continued to press and Will Roberts powered his way over from 15 metres out to extend the lead.

Surrey replied with a penalty, but tight head prop Declan Caulfield charged over from 10 metres out to extend the advantage once more.

And straight from the kick-off open side flanker James Sonner rounded off a fine Herts move by scoring under the posts.

With 15 minutes left, a loose ball was gathered by replacement flanker Pat Falvey who raced in from 40 metres out to make it 36-3 to the home side.

Try number seven for Herts came from Boyle and, within minutes, the centre was on the scoresheet again to complete his hat-trick.

Surrey scored a consolation try right at the end of the game when replacement prop James Gillespie powered over after a period of pressure on the Hertfordshire line.
