Things hot up in the Winter League at Hay

GOLF: The Little Hay Winter League looks set to end in a nail-biting finish.

The sixth round of the competition was played on Sunday and saw Alan Christie and Pauline Manning top score with 45 points, one point ahead of Barbara Frost and Mick Milne.

However, as a result of their consistency over all the rounds so far, the league leaders remain Mick and Gary Whelan with cumulative 254 points.

Just one point behind them, and up from third to second place, are Phil Chester and Richard Burgess, pushing Steve Pinnock and Keith Muir down to third with 251.

Three rounds are left to play and the teams will choose their best six rounds to count for the trophy.

Meanwhile, Little Hay Ladies began the week with their annual Bingo Bango Bongo, a fun competition played every January, in which players gain points by deeds of golfing skill over 18 holes.

This year’s winner was Linda Cusick with 28 points, second was Caroline Banks with 21 points and third was Suzanne Brady with 19 points.

On a more serious note, the ladies then retained their lead in the national competition for the Mary Forster Bowl.

They are leading by one point after two matches in the knock-out stage against Brent Valley and Blue Mountain Ladies.

The last round of the knock-out match will be played at Little Hay on March 10 and the winners will go through to the regional stage before the national final.
