Last Saturday they went to UCL Premier side Cogenhoe and lost 4-1. The hosts went into a 3-1 lead by the interval against a young Town side with their goal coming from newcomer Tom Day.

Town improved after the break but the Cooks added a fourth late on.

Ampthill went to SSML Division Two club Loughton Manor on Tuesday and lost 1-0. The only goal of the contest came in the tenth minute when Ashley Mead bundled over his attacker and the hosts scored from the penalty spot.

But despite having the better of the game for long periods Town lacked firepower up front to get back in contention.

Bradley Clarke, Jamie Cerminara and Joe McCabe all brought good saves from the home keeper and their tidy approach work deserved something from the match but they lacked the final touch on the night.

Town’s final friendly is against Crawley Green on Saturday with the venue still to be decided.

Ampthill are on their travels in their opening SSML Division One fixtures after the schedule was recently released.

Their opener is at Hatfield Town on Saturday. August 6 and that is followed by a midweek trip to Winslow before a trip to Hillingdon. All three finished in the lower reaches of the table last year and Town had wins at the latter two clubs.

But Town will need to find more authority in their play and have a better eye for goal to earn points from these travels.

Ampthill go to neighbours Bedford FC at Christmas with the return in April.
