Reigning Herts Senior Centenary Trophy champions Kings Langley made it through to the next round of this year’s competition with a last-gasp win over Harpenden Town.

With the scores locked at 2-2 after 90 minutes, the tie looked to be heading to extra-time until Sam Warrell pounced to fire Kings into the third round.

Kings began their defence of the Trophy in the best possible way – Craig Lynskey outfoxing Harpenden keeper Matt Lord for a tap-in from a Ben Long through-ball after just five minutes.

And Kings doubled their lead after 35 minutes when a Warrell free-kick was glanced home by Luke Ladyman.

As the hour mark approached, Kings appeared to be heading for victory, but lost concentration and Mark Hitchcock pounced to play-in James Ewington who halved the deficit.

And Harpenden were back on level terms nine minutes later, Hitchcock driving home the equaliser after Nathan Pooley was caught in possession.

With Kings still on the back foot, an attempted clearance hit the post, but that proved to be a defining moment as the visitors regrouped and pressed for the winner.

Extra-time beckoned, but Warrell was on hand to snatch the win for Kings, drilling home from Tom Carter’s low cross.
