Frome Town 1 Hemel Hempstead Town 3
Table topping Hemel Town returned to winning ways with a deserved victory at Frome Town on Saturday.
The Tudors had crashed to their first loss in six games a week previously, but they responded well to take the three points at Frome courtesy of goals from Steve O’Leary, Dave Pearce and Matt Nolan.
The victory ensured that Hemel maintain their five-point lead at the top of the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division, and manager Dean Brennan was understandably pleased with his side’s display.
“After going one down we showed good character to come back and win it,” he said.
“We were really strong, tough to break down and we created lots of chances, which is very positive.
“It was really important that we bounced back from last week.”
The Tudors started the game brightly and would have been in front if it were not for a string of fine saves from Frome keeper Ollie Chenoweth.
Pearce and Nolan were both denied by Chenoweth, but it was the hosts who took the lead in the 29th minute through Dave Gilroy.
The Tudors did not let their heads drop, though, and were back on level terms six minutes later.
Nolan was adjudged to have been fouled in the area, and O’Leary stepped up to dispatch the resulting penalty.
Frome looked for an immediate response, but it was Hemel who scored again to take a 2-1 lead into half-time.
Victor Osubu raced into the Frome area before pulling the ball back to Pearce, who finished with aplomb from 12 yards.
Clearly buoyed by the goal, Hemel started the second half well and continued to create chances,
The Tudors looked sharp, and it came as no surprise when Nolan slotted home from another Osubu assist to wrap up the win late on.
“I feel that the players are responding in the right manner,” said Brennan.
“We play simple, passing football and keep things basic. It’s a case of so far, so good, but there’s a long way to go yet.”
