Levy Green secure a Bigg three points

Biggleswade United 1 Leverstock Green 2

LEVY Green ended a run of four straight league defeats with a well-earned win at Biggleswade.

In difficult conditions, Green were made to work hard for the three points, but first half goals from Bekim Culaj and Dan Griggs were enough for Steve Heath’s side.

“It was all about the three points and we went into the game with that mentality,” said Heath. “We did not want to get beaten.”

“We absolutely ripped them to pieces at times in the first half.

“Our pace and movement was causing them all sorts of problems until they scored against the run of play, and that changed the game.

“I felt we were excellent in the last 10 minutes because we really had to dig in. We defended really well as a team and really worked hard.”

In difficult conditions, Green started well with Adam Hallissey twice coming close.

Junior Owusu-Akonor was also looking lively and the striker did well to power through a group of defenders, but could only manage to pull his shot wide.

Green were on top, despite battling against the wind, and the visitors took a deserved lead after 37 minutes.

Junior Owusu-Akonor threaded the ball through to Culaj, and the latter lifted the ball over Biggleswade keeper Scott Waters to put his side ahead.

The crucial second goal came in first half stoppage time, as Culaj found himself in an almost identical position against Waters.

This time his shot went across goal and just eluded Hallissey, but Griggs followed in to slot home for a 2-0 half time lead.

Levy started the second half as they had ended the first, but could not force a third goal.

And they were made to pay, against the run of play, as Chris Butler drilled home to cut the Green advantage.

Buoyed by the goal, the hosts laid siege on the Levy area, but Green held firm to secure the win.
